Simple Mineral and SmartChlor Water Care for Hot Tubs Up to 600 Gallons

Spend less time measuring chemicals and more time enjoying your hot tub with the FROG @ease Floating System Kit. This complete starter system combines FROG sanitizing minerals with self-regulating SmartChlor technology to maintain clean, clear water with a consistently low chlorine level.

The two-part system floats freely in the hot tub while automatically releasing sanitizer as the water needs it. SmartChlor maintains approximately 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine when the water is properly balanced, allowing the system to use up to 75% less chlorine than the minimum ANSI-recommended chlorine level for a hot tub.

When the SmartChlor cartridge is depleted, the floating system flips completely over to provide a visual replacement reminder. The included mineral cartridge lasts up to four months or until the hot tub is drained and refilled, whichever occurs first.

This listing includes one FROG @ease Floating System Kit with one mineral cartridge, one SmartChlor cartridge, one FROG Jump Start packet and 30 FROG @ease test strips. It does not include the replacement SmartChlor 3-pack.

🧩 Compatibility & Fitment

The FROG @ease Floating System is designed to float directly in a standard hot tub. FROG identifies hot tubs from approximately 150 to 600 gallons as suitable for this system.

It can be used with many Bullfrog Spas, Platinum Spas, Viking Spas, Olympus Spas and other hot tub brands when the system will be used as a free-floating sanitizer and the hot tub’s water capacity is within the supported range.

This is not an in-line, filter-housing, floating-weir, Simplicity or manufacturer-specific cartridge. If your hot tub has a built-in FROG @ease system, purchase the cartridge style specifically designed for that system.

  • For free-floating use in compatible hot tubs
  • Suitable for hot tubs up to 600 gallons
  • Not installed inside a filter housing or cartridge holder
  • Not a Bullfrog Simplicity cartridge
  • Not an in-line FROG @ease cartridge
  • Not intended to replace Jacuzzi- or Sundance-specific cartridges
  • Not the FROG @ease system designed for swim spas

If the hot tub was previously sanitized with bromine or biguanide products, drain and refill it with fresh water before starting FROG @ease. A hot tub previously maintained with dichlor may be converted without draining only when cyanuric acid is below 80 ppm. FROG’s preferred operating range is 0–50 ppm cyanuric acid.

📋 How to Use

1. Prepare the Hot Tub

  1. Confirm that the hot tub’s pump, filtration system and other equipment are operating correctly.
  2. Clean or replace dirty filter cartridges according to the hot tub manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Drain and refill the hot tub if it was previously maintained with bromine or biguanide.
  4. If converting from dichlor, test the cyanuric-acid level and drain the hot tub if it is above 80 ppm.
  5. If the source water contains high levels of iron, calcium or other metals, treat the water with an appropriate metal-control product before installing the system.

2. Balance the Water

Use the included FROG @ease test strips and bring the water into these recommended ranges:

pH 7.2–7.6
Total Alkalinity 80–120 ppm
Total Hardness 150–250 ppm
Total Dissolved Solids Below 1,500 ppm
Cyanuric Acid 0–50 ppm

Adjust total alkalinity before adjusting pH. Add balancing products separately and in small increments according to their package directions.

3. Establish the Initial Chlorine Level

  1. After balancing the water, add the included FROG Jump Start packet.
  2. Use one packet per hot tub up to 600 gallons.
  3. Allow the product to establish an initial free-chlorine level of approximately 0.5–1.0 ppm.

4. Set the SmartChlor Dial

Remove the outer packaging from the SmartChlor cartridge and turn its dial to the starting setting for the hot tub’s water capacity:

Hot Tub Capacity Starting Setting
200–299 gallons Setting 1
300–450 gallons Setting 2
451–550 gallons Setting 3
551–600 gallons Setting 4

The manufacturer’s current dial chart begins at 200 gallons. For a hot tub between 150 and 199 gallons, follow the current package label or contact Southern Leisure for setting assistance.

5. Assemble and Float the System

  1. Line up the arrows on the blue mineral cartridge and silver or dark-gray SmartChlor cartridge.
  2. Push the cartridges together.
  3. Twist until they lock securely.
  4. Place the connected system in the hot tub water.
  5. Allow it to float freely. A slight tilt is normal and does not mean the cartridge is empty.

6. Maintain the System

  1. Test the water regularly with FROG @ease test strips.
  2. Keep pH, total alkalinity and total hardness within the recommended ranges.
  3. Use FROG Maintain or another manufacturer-approved non-chlorine shock once a month or whenever the SmartChlor cartridge is replaced.
  4. Do not use dichlor as the routine maintenance shock because cyanuric-acid buildup can reduce SmartChlor’s effectiveness.
  5. Run the hot tub’s filtration system according to the spa manufacturer’s instructions.

7. Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge

  1. When the system flips completely over, lift it from the water and allow it to drain into the hot tub.
  2. Return it to the water to confirm that it flips completely over.
  3. Twist the depleted SmartChlor cartridge to the unlock position.
  4. Remove the empty cartridge from the mineral cartridge.
  5. Attach a new FROG @ease Floating SmartChlor cartridge.
  6. Set the new cartridge dial for the hot tub’s water capacity.
  7. Return the assembled system to the hot tub.

Replace the complete floating system after four months or whenever the hot tub is drained and refilled, whichever occurs first.

💬 Southern Leisure Says

This is the correct first purchase for a hot tub owner starting the standard, free-floating FROG @ease system. The package gives you the mineral portion of the system, one SmartChlor cartridge, startup shock and the proper test strips.

After the initial SmartChlor cartridge is depleted, you do not need to purchase another complete system immediately. Replace only the SmartChlor portion using the FROG @ease Floating SmartChlor 3-Pack.

Once the mineral cartridge reaches four months—or whenever the hot tub is drained and refilled—replace the entire floating system with a new kit. Do not continue using the old mineral cartridge simply because material can still be heard inside it.

🧼 Care & Maintenance

  • Maintain pH between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Maintain total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm.
  • Maintain total hardness between 150 and 250 ppm.
  • Keep cyanuric acid within the recommended 0–50 ppm range.
  • Use FROG @ease test strips rather than conventional chlorine strips.
  • Clean the hot tub filter according to the spa manufacturer’s schedule.
  • Use a non-chlorine maintenance shock once a month or when replacing SmartChlor.
  • Do not use dichlor as the routine maintenance shock.
  • Replace SmartChlor when the system flips completely over.
  • Replace the entire system every four months or after draining and refilling.
  • Remove the system while soaking with the jets running if it is being pulled toward the skimmer or filter well.
  • If removed, allow the system to drain into the hot tub and place it on a surface that will not be damaged by chlorine.
  • Always return the system to the hot tub after soaking.
  • Use an optional tether if the system is repeatedly pulled into the skimmer or filter area.
  • Do not allow a partially filled SmartChlor cartridge to sink to the bottom because it may bleach the spa surface.
  • Keep the product out of the reach of children.
  • This product is not a toy.
  • Always follow the current product label and operating instructions.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is included with this system kit?

The kit includes one blue FROG @ease mineral cartridge, one silver or dark-gray SmartChlor cartridge, one FROG Jump Start startup packet, 30 FROG @ease test strips and the operating instructions.

Does this listing include the SmartChlor 3-pack?

No. This starter kit includes one SmartChlor cartridge. The FROG @ease Floating SmartChlor 3-Pack is a separate replacement product.

What is the difference between the system kit and the 3-pack?

The system kit supplies the mineral cartridge required to operate FROG @ease along with the first SmartChlor cartridge, startup shock and test strips. The replacement 3-pack contains SmartChlor cartridges only and does not replace the mineral portion of the system.

How long does the included SmartChlor cartridge last?

FROG estimates approximately three to four weeks in an average 400-gallon hot tub. Actual cartridge life depends on water capacity, dial setting, water balance, temperature, bather load and frequency of use.

How long does the mineral cartridge last?

The mineral cartridge lasts up to four months or until the hot tub is drained and refilled, whichever happens first. After that, replace the complete system kit.

How will I know when SmartChlor is empty?

The floating system will flip completely over. Because the system normally floats at a slight tilt, lift and drain it before returning it to the water to confirm that it flips completely.

Can I purchase the mineral cartridge separately?

The mineral cartridge for this floating system is supplied as part of a new FROG @ease Floating System Kit. Replace the complete system every four months or when draining and refilling.

Can this system be used in a Bullfrog Spa?

It can float in a compatible Bullfrog Spa within the supported water capacity, but it is not installed in the Bullfrog Simplicity filter housing or another built-in cartridge holder. Spas equipped with an integrated FROG system should use the cartridge specifically designed for that system.

Can this system be used in a swim spa?

This product is designed for hot tubs up to 600 gallons. Use the dedicated FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas for a swim-spa application.

Can I switch from bromine to this system?

Yes, but the hot tub must be drained and refilled with fresh water before switching from bromine or biguanide products to FROG @ease.

Can I switch from dichlor without draining?

FROG permits conversion without draining when cyanuric acid is below 80 ppm. For proper operation, cyanuric acid should be maintained within the recommended 0–50 ppm range.

Can I use regular hot tub test strips?

FROG @ease test strips are strongly recommended. Conventional strips can misinterpret the SmartChlor reserve and may make the chlorine readings appear confusing or incorrect.

Does the system still require shock?

Yes. The current manufacturer instructions call for a non-chlorine maintenance shock once a month or whenever the SmartChlor cartridge is replaced. Do not use dichlor as the routine maintenance shock.

Can I remove the system while using the hot tub?

Yes. Allow it to drain into the hot tub and place it on a surface that will not be damaged by chlorine. Return the system to the water immediately after soaking.

Is a tether included?

No. The current system has an opening for an optional tether, but the tether is sold separately. A tether can help keep the system away from jets, skimmers and filter wells.
