Self-Regulating SmartChlor for Easier Swim Spa Water Care

Keep your swim spa continuously sanitized without measuring and adding chlorine every day. The FROG® @ease® Swim Spa SmartChlor® Replacement Cartridge uses self-regulating SmartChlor Technology to maintain a consistent, low free-chlorine level while automatically responding to changes in sanitizer demand.

This translucent gray cartridge connects directly to the blue Mineral Cartridge from the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. Once connected and properly adjusted, the complete system floats in the swim spa and gradually rotates as the SmartChlor is used. When the system flips upside down, it is time to check the cartridge and install a replacement.

Package quantity: This listing includes one Swim Spa SmartChlor Replacement Cartridge. The Mineral Cartridge, test strips, tether, startup treatment, and complete floating system are not included.

Compatibility: This cartridge is designed exclusively for the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas up to 3,000 gallons. It is not compatible with FROG @ease hot-tub systems, Simplicity systems, inline systems, or other FROG cartridge holders.

🔹 Key Benefits

  • Self-regulates to deliver sanitizing power as the swim spa needs it
  • Maintains approximately 0.5–1.0 ppm free chlorine when used correctly
  • Uses up to 75% less chlorine than the minimum recommended chlorine level for an ordinary swim spa
  • Helps eliminate daily chlorine measuring and handling
  • Prefilled cartridge provides clean, convenient installation
  • Works with FROG Sanitizing Minerals to kill bacteria two ways
  • Creates a chlorine reserve that responds to changing sanitizer demand
  • Helps reduce strong chlorine odors and swimsuit fading
  • Supports softer-feeling, easier-to-maintain swim spa water
  • Typically lasts approximately three to four weeks
  • Translucent housing allows the SmartChlor level to be viewed
  • Floating system gradually rotates as the cartridge is depleted
  • Designed for swim spas containing up to 3,000 gallons
  • Cyanuric-acid-free SmartChlor formula
  • Recyclable through the FROG recycling program where available

📋 How to Use

Always follow the physical product label and the manual supplied with your FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. The physical label takes priority if its instructions differ from the general guidance below.

1. Confirm System Compatibility

  • Use only with the blue Mineral Cartridge from the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas.
  • Do not place the cartridge loose in the swim spa.
  • Do not attempt to use it with a FROG hot-tub, Simplicity, inline, or Serene system.
  • Confirm that the swim spa contains no more than 3,000 gallons.

2. Balance the Water

Test and balance the swim spa water before installing the new cartridge. FROG recommends maintaining:

  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • pH: 7.2–7.6
  • Total hardness: 150–250 ppm

Maintaining the proper pH is particularly important because excessively high pH can reduce SmartChlor’s effectiveness.

3. Set the SmartChlor Dial

Adjust the dial on the new SmartChlor Cartridge according to the swim spa’s actual water capacity:

Swim Spa Capacity Starting Setting
Less than 1,800 gallons Setting 2
1,800–2,200 gallons Setting 3
More than 2,200 gallons Setting 4

These are recommended starting settings. Follow the system manual and adjust only when necessary for water capacity, usage, temperature, filtration time, and water conditions.

4. Connect the Cartridge

  1. Remove the floating system from the swim spa.
  2. Separate the empty gray SmartChlor Cartridge from the blue Mineral Cartridge.
  3. Set the dial on the new cartridge before installation.
  4. Align the new SmartChlor Cartridge with the Mineral Cartridge.
  5. Snap or twist the cartridges together according to the system manual.
  6. Confirm that the connection is secure.
  7. Return the assembled system to the swim spa.
  8. Reconnect the tether when one is being used.

5. Test the Water Weekly

  • Use genuine FROG @ease Test Strips at least once each week.
  • Dip the strip into the water, remove it with the pads facing upward, and shake once.
  • Compare the test pads with the color chart on the test-strip bottle.
  • Maintain the recommended alkalinity, pH, and hardness ranges.
  • Use the SmartChlor Out Indicator to determine whether sanitizer remains available.

Ordinary chlorine test strips can produce confusing total-chlorine and free-chlorine readings because SmartChlor maintains a chlorine reserve. FROG @ease Test Strips are specifically designed for this system.

6. Follow the System’s Rotation

  • A slight tilt is normal because the SmartChlor inside the cartridge can shift.
  • When the system reaches approximately a three-quarter rotation, add FROG Maintain for Swim Spas according to its label.
  • This monthly non-chlorine maintenance treatment can help maximize the remaining cartridge life.
  • Do not use dichlor as the routine maintenance shock for this system.

7. Replace the Cartridge When Empty

  • Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge when the floating system flips upside down.
  • Confirm the cartridge is empty by checking the translucent housing and using the FROG @ease Test Strip Out Indicator.
  • If the system does not flip completely, remove it, drain the trapped water, and return it to the swim spa. If it immediately flips, the SmartChlor Cartridge is empty.
  • Install a fresh SmartChlor Cartridge promptly so the swim spa does not remain without sanitizer.

💬 Southern Leisure Says

Do not replace the entire floating system every time the SmartChlor runs out. During the normal four-month water-care cycle, replace only the gray SmartChlor Cartridge when the system flips and continue using the existing blue Mineral Cartridge.

The blue Mineral Cartridge must still be replaced every four months or whenever the swim spa is drained and refilled, whichever comes first. The minerals may still make noise inside the cartridge after four months, but that does not mean they remain effective.

For the most reliable results, keep the water balanced, test weekly with FROG @ease Test Strips, use FROG Maintain when the system reaches approximately a three-quarter rotation, and replace the SmartChlor Cartridge as soon as the system flips.

🧼 Care & Maintenance

  • Test and balance the swim spa water every week.
  • Keep pH within the recommended 7.2–7.6 range.
  • Check the translucent cartridge regularly to monitor the remaining SmartChlor.
  • Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge when the floating system flips upside down.
  • Expect approximately three to four weeks of cartridge life under normal conditions.
  • Heavy use, higher temperatures, longer filtration cycles, larger water capacity, or unbalanced water may shorten cartridge life.
  • Use FROG Maintain for Swim Spas when the system reaches approximately a three-quarter rotation.
  • Do not use dichlor as the system’s routine maintenance shock.
  • Replace the Mineral Cartridge every four months or after every drain and refill.
  • Keep the system tethered when necessary to prevent it from entering the swim area or becoming trapped near a skimmer.
  • Store unused cartridges in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
  • Keep cartridges away from heat, moisture, flames, children, and pets.
  • Do not open, refill, or modify the cartridge.
  • Do not mix the cartridge contents with other concentrated chemicals.
  • Follow all safety, handling, storage, first-aid, and disposal directions printed on the physical label.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does this listing include the complete floating system?

No. This listing includes one gray Swim Spa SmartChlor Replacement Cartridge. It does not include the blue Mineral Cartridge, test strips, tether, startup treatment, or complete floating system.

Can I use this cartridge in a regular hot tub?

No. This cartridge is designed specifically for the FROG @ease Sanitizing System for Swim Spas. FROG hot-tub systems use different cartridges and should be matched to their exact system.

How long does one cartridge last?

A SmartChlor Cartridge typically lasts approximately three to four weeks. Actual life depends on swim spa size, water temperature, filtration time, bather load, cartridge setting, and water balance.

How do I know when the cartridge is empty?

The floating system flips upside down when the SmartChlor Cartridge is empty. You can also view the contents through the translucent housing and confirm the sanitizer status with the Out Indicator on a FROG @ease Test Strip.

Is it normal for the system to tilt?

Yes. A slight tilt is normal because the SmartChlor inside the cartridge can shift. At approximately a three-quarter rotation, use FROG Maintain for Swim Spas according to its label. Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge when the system flips upside down.

Do I replace the Mineral Cartridge at the same time?

Not during every SmartChlor change. Replace the gray SmartChlor Cartridge whenever it becomes empty. Replace the blue Mineral Cartridge every four months or whenever the swim spa is drained and refilled, whichever comes first.

Can I use regular test strips?

FROG recommends using FROG @ease Test Strips because SmartChlor maintains a chlorine reserve that can create confusing total-chlorine and free-chlorine readings on ordinary strips.

Can I use dichlor as the monthly maintenance shock?

No. Do not use dichlor as the routine maintenance shock for this system. Use FROG Maintain for Swim Spas according to its label and the FROG @ease swim-spa instructions.

Why did my cartridge last less than four weeks?

Cartridge life can be shortened by heavy swim-spa use, a higher dial setting, warm water, extended filtration, high sanitizer demand, unbalanced water, or a larger swim spa. Check the water balance and confirm that the dial matches the swim spa’s actual capacity.

Can I refill the empty cartridge?

No. The cartridge is factory filled and should not be opened, modified, or refilled. Replace it with a genuine FROG @ease Swim Spa SmartChlor Cartridge.

Does SmartChlor contain cyanuric acid?

No. SmartChlor is cyanuric-acid-free. However, previously added stabilized chlorine products can leave cyanuric acid in the water.

What if I previously used bromine or biguanide?

Drain and refill the swim spa before converting from bromine or biguanide to FROG @ease. FROG also directs users to drain and refill if the cyanuric acid level exceeds 80 ppm.
