Raise Low Calcium Hardness and Help Protect Your Spa

Southern Leisure Hardness+ is a professional-grade calcium hardness increaser formulated to raise low calcium levels in hot tubs and swim spas. The fast-dissolving calcium chloride granules help correct soft, aggressive water and support properly balanced spa water.

Calcium hardness is an important part of water balance alongside total alkalinity and pH. Water with insufficient calcium may contribute to corrosion and premature wear of heaters, pump components, metal fittings, and other spa equipment. Excessively hard water can promote scale, cloudy water, and mineral deposits.

For most portable spas, maintain calcium hardness within the spa manufacturer’s recommended range. FROG @ease specifies a total-hardness range of 150–250 ppm. Southern Leisure generally recommends targeting approximately 175–225 ppm within that range unless the spa manufacturer provides different instructions.

🔹 Key Benefits

  • Raises low calcium hardness in spa water
  • Helps correct soft, aggressive water conditions
  • Supports protection of heaters, pumps, plumbing, and metal components
  • Helps reduce the risk of corrosion and premature equipment wear
  • Supports stable, properly balanced water chemistry
  • Fast-dissolving granular calcium chloride formula
  • Easy to measure for spas of different capacities
  • Compatible with chlorine and bromine water-care programs
  • Compatible with FROG @ease when the water is balanced to the system’s requirements
  • Suitable for acrylic portable hot tubs and swim spas
  • Ideal for balancing fresh water after a drain and refill
  • Concentrated one-pound container provides multiple spa treatments

📋 How to Use

  1. Determine the spa’s actual water capacity.
  2. Test the water before adding Hardness+.
  3. Adjust total alkalinity and pH before completing the calcium-hardness adjustment.
  4. Determine the difference between the current hardness reading and the desired level.
  5. Measure approximately ¾ ounce per 500 gallons for each 10 ppm increase required.
  6. Fill a clean plastic bucket with spa water.
  7. Slowly add the measured Hardness+ to the water. Always add the chemical to water—never pour water into concentrated chemical.
  8. Stir carefully until the granules are dissolved. Calcium chloride generates heat while dissolving.
  9. With the circulation system operating and the spa unoccupied, slowly distribute the solution around the perimeter of the spa.
  10. Leave the cover open and allow the water to circulate thoroughly.
  11. Wait for the period specified on the product label before retesting.
  12. Repeat with another measured dose if additional adjustment is required.
Spa Capacity Approximate Amount for a 10 ppm Increase
300 gallons 0.45 ounce
400 gallons 0.60 ounce
500 gallons 0.75 ounce
1,000 gallons 1.50 ounces

Example: A 400-gallon spa that needs a 50 ppm increase requires approximately 3 ounces of Hardness+. Divide larger corrections into smaller additions and retest between doses.

Important: The dosage chart is calculated from the product’s stated ¾-ounce-per-500-gallon dosage. Always follow the current directions and precautions printed on the container.

💬 Southern Leisure Says

Water can look perfectly clear while still having insufficient calcium hardness. Because damage from aggressive water may develop inside the heater, pumps, fittings, and plumbing, a visual inspection alone cannot confirm that the water is properly balanced.

Test hardness every time the spa is drained and refilled—especially when the home has naturally soft water or a water-softening system. Correcting a low reading at startup is much easier than dealing with corrosion or premature component wear later.

🧼 Care & Maintenance

  • Test hardness whenever the spa is filled or topped off substantially.
  • Retest periodically because source water and evaporation can affect mineral concentration.
  • Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.
  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
  • Protect the product from moisture and humidity.
  • Use only a clean, dry measuring scoop.
  • Do not return unused product to the container.
  • Do not mix Hardness+ with another chemical in the same bucket or measuring container.
  • Always add the product to water—not water to the concentrated product.
  • Be aware that calcium chloride releases heat as it dissolves.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes and skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Follow all handling, first-aid, and safety instructions printed on the container.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What does Southern Leisure Hardness+ do?

It adds calcium chloride to spa water, raising the calcium-hardness level when testing shows that the water is too soft.

What should calcium hardness be in a hot tub?

A commonly recommended range for portable hot tubs is 150–250 ppm. FROG @ease also specifies a total-hardness range of 150–250 ppm. Southern Leisure generally targets approximately 175–225 ppm unless the spa manufacturer specifies otherwise.

How much Hardness+ should I add?

Approximately ¾ ounce per 500 gallons raises calcium hardness about 10 ppm. Adjust the dosage for the spa’s actual capacity and the number of ppm it needs to increase.

Can I add Hardness+ directly to the spa?

Pre-dissolving the measured product in a clean plastic bucket of spa water promotes even distribution. Always add the product slowly to water, never water to concentrated calcium chloride, because the dissolving process generates heat.

How soon should I retest the water?

Allow the product to dissolve and circulate completely, then follow the waiting period printed on the container before retesting. Avoid adding multiple large doses without testing between adjustments.

Can I use Hardness+ with FROG @ease?

Yes. FROG @ease requires properly balanced water and specifies total hardness between 150 and 250 ppm. Use FROG @ease Test Strips or an appropriate water test to verify the level before adding Hardness+.

Can I use it with chlorine or bromine?

Yes. Hardness+ is a water-balancing product and is compatible with properly maintained chlorine and bromine sanitation programs.

Should I add Hardness+ after every refill?

Only when testing shows that the hardness is below the desired range. Some source water already contains sufficient or excessive calcium and does not need an increaser.

What happens if calcium hardness is too low?

Water with insufficient hardness may become aggressive and contribute to corrosion, pitting, and premature wear of heaters, pump components, fittings, and other spa equipment.

What happens if calcium hardness is too high?

Excessively hard water can contribute to scale, cloudy water, rough deposits, white flakes, and buildup on heaters, jets, plumbing, and spa surfaces.

Can Hardness+ lower a high hardness reading?

No. Hardness+ only raises calcium hardness. Lowering an excessive level usually requires partially draining the spa and replacing some water with lower-hardness source water.

Are calcium hardness and total hardness the same?

Not exactly. Calcium hardness measures dissolved calcium, while total hardness includes calcium and magnesium. Many spa test strips report total hardness, so follow the test-product scale and the spa or sanitizer manufacturer’s instructions.

Can I fill the spa through a household water softener?

Fully softened water frequently has insufficient calcium hardness. If softened water must be used, test it carefully and add Hardness+ as required. When possible, consult Southern Leisure about the best filling method for your source water and spa model.
