Lower Elevated Hot Tub pH for More Comfortable, Balanced Spa Water
Bring elevated hot tub pH back into the proper range with Southern Leisure pH Decreaser. This concentrated granular water-balancing product contains 100% sodium bisulfate and is formulated to gradually lower the pH of spa water.
Maintaining balanced pH helps your sanitizer work effectively, improves water comfort and protects hot tub surfaces and equipment from scale caused by excessively high pH. The product label recommends maintaining spa water between 7.4 and 7.6.
The convenient dry formula is easy to measure and can be dissolved in water or added directly to the spa water according to the product label. Always treat in measured increments and retest the water after one hour before adding more.
Package includes one 1.5 lb bottle of Southern Leisure pH Decreaser.

📋 How to Use
1. Test the Spa Water
- Use an accurate spa test strip or liquid test kit to measure the current pH.
- Confirm that the pH is above the recommended 7.4–7.6 range before adding this product.
- Determine the approximate water capacity of your spa before calculating the treatment amount.
2. Measure the Recommended Amount
Use the following label dosage chart for a 500-gallon spa:
| Current pH Reading | Dosage for 500 Gallons |
| 7.6–8.0 | 1/2 oz |
| 8.0–8.4 | 3/4 oz |
| Above 8.4 | 1 1/4 oz |
For a spa containing less than 500 gallons, reduce the dosage proportionally. For example, a 250-gallon spa would use approximately one-half of the amount shown in the chart. When uncertain, begin with a smaller amount and retest before adding more.
3. Add the Product
- Turn on the spa’s circulation system.
- Measure the product carefully using a clean, dry measuring tool.
- Dissolve the measured product in water only or add it directly to the spa water according to the label.
- If adding directly, distribute it across the water rather than allowing concentrated product to collect in one location.
- Keep the spa cover open during treatment.
- Do not mix this product with any other spa chemical.
4. Circulate and Retest
- Allow the spa water to circulate thoroughly.
- Wait one hour after treatment.
- Retest the pH.
- If the pH remains elevated, add another carefully measured dose based on the new test result.
- Repeat only as necessary until the pH is maintained between 7.4 and 7.6.
Never add additional product simply because the first treatment did not produce an immediate test change. Allow the full one-hour circulation period before retesting and treating again.
💬 Southern Leisure Says
High pH is best corrected gradually. Adding too much pH Decreaser at one time can push the water below the recommended range, requiring another product to raise it again. Begin conservatively, circulate for one hour and base every additional treatment on a fresh water test.
Make sure you know the actual water capacity of your hot tub. Dosage should be based on gallons rather than the spa’s outside dimensions or number of seats.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What does Southern Leisure pH Decreaser do?
It lowers elevated pH in hot tub and spa water. Its active ingredient is 100% sodium bisulfate, commonly called dry acid.
What pH should I maintain?
The product label directs spa owners to maintain pH between 7.4 and 7.6.
How much should I add to a 500-gallon spa?
For a pH reading of 7.6–8.0, add 1/2 oz. For a reading of 8.0–8.4, add 3/4 oz. For a reading above 8.4, add 1 1/4 oz. Retest after one hour before adding more.
How much should I use in a spa smaller than 500 gallons?
Reduce the listed dosage in proportion to the spa’s actual water capacity. For example, a 250-gallon spa uses approximately half of the listed 500-gallon dosage. Beginning with a slightly smaller amount provides additional control.
How long should I wait before retesting?
Allow the water to circulate for one hour before retesting and deciding whether another treatment is needed.
Can I add pH Decreaser directly to the spa?
The label permits the product to be dissolved in water or added directly to the spa water. Follow the current label, keep the circulation system operating and distribute the treatment carefully.
Can I mix it with another chemical before adding it?
No. Never mix pH Decreaser with another spa chemical. Add each water-care product to the spa separately and allow it to circulate.
Will this product lower total alkalinity?
It can. Sodium bisulfate lowers pH and may also reduce total alkalinity. Test both readings after treatment, particularly when making repeated adjustments.
Why does my pH keep increasing?
Recurring pH increases can be caused by high total alkalinity, aeration from jets, source-water chemistry or frequent spa use. Check total alkalinity before repeatedly adding more pH Decreaser.
Can I use this with a FROG @ease system?
Yes. This product may be used to balance pH before and during operation of a FROG @ease system. Follow the water-balance requirements for the specific FROG system and test with the appropriate strips.
Is this product a sanitizer?
No. pH Decreaser balances the water but does not replace chlorine, bromine, SmartChlor or another approved spa sanitizer.
Is sodium bisulfate hazardous?
Yes. The bottle warns that this product can cause severe burns. Avoid contact with the eyes, skin and clothing, keep it out of the reach of children and follow all precautions and first-aid instructions printed on the label.
