Easy, Self-Regulating Water Care for Classic Bullfrog Spa Filtration

Make maintaining clean, clear spa water easier with the FROG® @ease® Classic System Kit for Bullfrog Spas. This complete startup kit combines a FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge with a SmartChlor® Cartridge to sanitize your hot tub two ways while reducing frequent measuring, handling, and chemical adjustments.

The Classic System Kit is designed for compatible Bullfrog Spas with two cylindrical filters and the triangular Classic cartridge holder. Common applications include Bullfrog X Series, STIL, R Series, and A Series spas manufactured before the 2023 model year.

The kit includes one FROG @ease Mineral Cartridge, one SmartChlor Cartridge, one FROG Jump Start® packet, and one bottle of FROG @ease Test Strips. A compatible Bullfrog Classic cartridge holder is required and is not included.

🧩 Compatibility & Fitment

This Classic System Kit is designed for Bullfrog Spas equipped with two cylindrical filter cartridges and the triangular FROG @ease Classic cartridge holder. Common compatible applications include:

  • Bullfrog X Series spas with the Classic dual-filter configuration
  • Bullfrog STIL spas with the Classic cartridge holder
  • Bullfrog R Series spas with two cylindrical filters
  • Bullfrog A Series spas manufactured before the 2023 model year with the Classic filtration configuration
  • Other compatible Bullfrog Spas with two cylindrical filters and the triangular Classic cartridge holder

Important: The filter style and cartridge holder should be used as the final fitment check. Bullfrog filtration systems have changed over the years, so do not order based only on the spa’s series or model year.

This kit does not fit Bullfrog Spas with flat, rectangular Simplicity filters. If your spa has the updated Bullfrog Simplicity Filter Housing 10-04669, choose the appropriate regular-size Simplicity System Kit or XL Simplicity System Kit instead.

A separate Bullfrog Classic cartridge holder is required to secure the Mineral and SmartChlor Cartridges between the spa’s two cylindrical filters. Many compatible spas already have this holder installed. If yours is missing, contact Southern Leisure before ordering.

📋 How to Use

  1. Confirm that your spa has two cylindrical filters and the triangular Bullfrog Classic cartridge holder.
  2. Fill the hot tub and verify that its circulation and filtration equipment are operating properly.
  3. Test the water using a FROG @ease Test Strip.
  4. Balance total alkalinity to 80–120 ppm.
  5. Balance pH to 7.2–7.6.
  6. Balance total hardness to 150–250 ppm.
  7. Add the included FROG Jump Start packet according to its label directions to establish the initial chlorine residual.
  8. Set the SmartChlor Cartridge dial to the recommended setting for your Bullfrog Spa model.
  9. Set the blue Mineral Cartridge to its highest setting as directed in the operating instructions.
  10. Snap the Mineral and SmartChlor Cartridges into the appropriate openings in the Classic cartridge holder.
  11. Install the holder between the two cylindrical filters with the silver SmartChlor Cartridge facing the inside of the hot tub.
  12. Test the water regularly with FROG @ease Test Strips.
  13. Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge when the test-strip Out Indicator shows that it is depleted.

The SmartChlor Cartridge typically lasts approximately three to four weeks in an average 400-gallon hot tub. Actual cartridge life varies based on water capacity, temperature, bather load, filtration, water balance, and cartridge setting.

💬 Southern Leisure Says

This is the correct starter kit for many Bullfrog X Series, STIL, R Series, and pre-2023 A Series spas with two cylindrical filters. The easiest way to confirm compatibility is to inspect the filter compartment for two round filters and the triangular cartridge holder positioned between them.

If your spa has flat, rectangular Simplicity filters or the updated Simplicity Filter Housing 10-04669, this is not the correct kit. Those spas require a regular-size or XL Simplicity system instead.

We strongly recommend using only FROG @ease Test Strips with this system. Standard test strips can misinterpret the SmartChlor reserve and make the total chlorine reading appear higher than the active free-chlorine level.

🧼 Care & Maintenance

  • Test the water regularly with FROG @ease Test Strips.
  • Maintain pH between 7.2 and 7.6.
  • Maintain total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm.
  • Maintain total hardness between 150 and 250 ppm.
  • Replace the SmartChlor Cartridge when the Out Indicator shows that it is depleted.
  • Replace the Mineral Cartridge every four months or whenever the spa is drained and refilled.
  • Use FROG Maintain® or another compatible non-chlorine MPS shock when replacing the SmartChlor Cartridge or approximately once per month.
  • Do not use routine dichlor shock because cyanuric acid buildup can interfere with SmartChlor performance.
  • Clean or replace the cylindrical filters according to Bullfrog’s recommendations.
  • Run the filtration system according to Bullfrog’s recommended schedule.
  • Keep unused cartridges sealed in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location.
  • Always follow the operating instructions and chemical labels supplied with the system.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Which Bullfrog Spas use the Classic System Kit?

The Classic System Kit is commonly used in Bullfrog X Series, STIL, R Series, and A Series spas manufactured before the 2023 model year. The spa should have two cylindrical filters and a triangular Classic cartridge holder.

How can I tell the Classic and Simplicity systems apart?

The Classic system uses triangular cartridges installed in a separate holder between two cylindrical filters. The Simplicity system uses rounded cartridges installed alongside flat, rectangular filters.

Does this kit use Simplicity Filter Housing 10-04669?

No. The updated Simplicity Filter Housing 10-04669 is used with regular-size and XL Simplicity cartridges. This Classic kit requires the older triangular cartridge holder used between two cylindrical filters.

Is the Classic cartridge holder included?

No. The kit contains the water-care cartridges, Jump Start packet, and test strips. A compatible Bullfrog Classic cartridge holder is required and must already be installed or purchased separately.

What is included in the System Kit?

The package includes one Classic SmartChlor Cartridge, one Classic Mineral Cartridge, one FROG Jump Start packet, and one bottle of FROG @ease Test Strips.

How long does the SmartChlor Cartridge last?

It typically lasts approximately three to four weeks in an average 400-gallon hot tub. Actual life depends on water capacity, temperature, bather load, filtration, water balance, and cartridge setting.

How often should I replace the Mineral Cartridge?

Replace it every four months or whenever the hot tub is drained and refilled, whichever occurs first. The minerals are depleted after four months even if material can still be heard inside the cartridge.

Why do I need FROG @ease Test Strips?

SmartChlor creates a sanitizer reserve that standard test strips may interpret as elevated total chlorine. FROG @ease Test Strips are designed for this system and include an Out Indicator showing when the SmartChlor Cartridge needs replacement.

Do I still need to shock the spa?

Yes. Use the included FROG Jump Start packet during startup. For recurring maintenance, use FROG Maintain or another compatible non-chlorine MPS shock when replacing the SmartChlor Cartridge or approximately once per month. Routine dichlor shock is not recommended because cyanuric acid buildup can reduce SmartChlor’s effectiveness.

Can I switch from bromine without draining the spa?

No. If the spa was previously maintained with bromine or biguanide, drain and refill it before installing FROG @ease. A spa previously using dichlor may be converted without draining only when its cyanuric acid level is below 80 ppm.

How can I confirm compatibility before ordering?

Look for two cylindrical filters and a triangular cartridge holder between them. If you are uncertain, send Southern Leisure your spa model, serial number, and clear pictures of the filter compartment before ordering.
